A pre-existing condition is a health problem that existed or was treated before you applied for coverage under a new individual of family health insurance plan.

Certain serious conditions, including cancer, heart-disease or insulin-dependent diabetes, may result in an automatic decline by the insurance company. However, there are a number of other common medical conditions that may not necessarily prevent applicants from obtaining individual or family coverage.

If you are unsure about qualifying for non-group health insurance because of a pre-existing condition, you should contact one of our licensed health insurance agents and ask. Underwriting rules differ across carriers and states, so it’s still possible there would be an individual or family health insurance plan that works for you.

The Smileback Foundation, an Arizona Nonprofit Organization for Children In Need announced their second annual free dental care “Smile Scholarship” recipients.    Founded in 2011 by Kristen Robison, The Smile Back Foundation has transformed the generous donations of Mesa dentist Dr. Gary Robsion and Gilbert Arizona Dental Professionals into a program dedicated to helping children in need of dental care who could not otherwise afford it, gain personal confidence through beautiful smiles.

“This is our second annual “Smile Scholarship” awards”  states Robison Orthodontics PR manager, Cindy Kellis, “last year we were really excited to award two Smile Scholarships,  and this year we were very fortunate to increase our contributions to four”.

Founder, Kristen Robison states “”there is such a remarkable transformation in children when they go from being self-conscious to confident in their smiles. Through the efforts of our Mesa and Gilbert dental professionals who have committed their Orthodontic and dental care services, free of charge as a way of giving back to their community. We are able to bring dental and orthodontic treatment to those who may otherwise not have access to quality care.  Our ultimate goal is that children who receive treatment find the inner-confidence to pursue their dreams.

To be eligible for the scholarships, children must be 12 years old, a Gilbert or Mesa resident, be enrolled as a student up to age 18, provide community service while receiving treatment and qualify under financial guidelines.  The list of requirements and the application can be found by visiting http://www.smilebackfoundation.org

Scholarships are awarded based on the recommendations of a volunteer board of dental professionals, business and civic leaders”.

In most cases, when you complete your application you’ll provide a credit card number or a check written to the health insurance company for the first premium payment. Typically, your credit card will not be charged nor will your check be cashed until you are approved for coverage. If you are not approved for coverage or if you cancel your application, your card will not be charged and any check payment you made will be returned or refunded.

Once you’ve been approved for coverage, your ongoing premium payments are paid to your health insurance company typically on a monthly or quarterly basis. Insurance companies typically offer several payment options including monthly billings to be paid by check or credit card, automatic bank drafts or automated credit card charges. Please note that credit card billing of premiums is optional and you can obtain coverage without using that method of payment.

What is a coinsurance?

Coinsurance is the term used by health insurance companies to refer to the amount that you are required to pay for a medical claim, apart from any co-payments or deductible. For example, if your health insurance plan has a 20% coinsurance requirement (and does not have any additional co-payment or deductible requirements), then a $100 medical bill would cost you $20, and the insurance company would pay the remaining $80.

What is a deductible?

A “deductible” is a specific dollar amount that your health insurance company may require that you pay out-of-pocket each year before your health insurance plan begins to make payments for claims. Not all health insurance plans require a deductible. As a general rule (though there are many exceptions), HMO plans typically do not require a deductible, while most Indemnity and PPO plans do.
